  • The Unbeatables

    Richard O. Smith

eBook (Signal Books, Jan. 19, 2015)
Shy boy Amadeo reigns supreme at table football in his local cafĆ©. Taking on all comers he is one of ā€œthe unbeatablesā€ with his loyal team of tiny foosballers. But thereā€™s another ā€œunbeatableā€ in town. Aggrieved by his only ever defeat at the hands of Amadeo in a foosball match when they were kids, Flash the town bully returns to seek revenge. Not only does he destroy the foosball table, but he challenges Amadeo to a game of actual football. Amadeo has never played real football - and Flash, with his insatiable quest for glory, has subsequently risen to become the worldā€™s most famous soccer star. With the future of the village at stake and his foosballers scattered, the situation looks hopeless for Amadeo. Unless he can recruit the help of his eccentric fellow villagers and the girl he loves, Lara, to take on the worldā€™s best football team captained by his nemesis Flash. And unless the foossballers can be reunited. ā€œItā€™ll be like Barcelona against a non-league team with an injury crisis,ā€ predicts Lara. What nobody predicts, however, is how Amadeoā€™s foosballers will affect the gameā€¦ The Unbeatables novel is the ultimate fantasy football story. Expanding upon the original movie, the novel includes additional adventures and characters. Written for young adults (and not so young adults), the book is a scintillating, action-packed 90 minutes of end-to-end incident, comedic flair, goalmouth scrambles and dubious off the ball challenges on the ethos of the modern game. Praise for The Unbeatables: ā€œThe witty dialogue and banter makes for some very funny moments, while the digs at the excesses of modern footballers will ring true to followers of the Beautiful Game.ā€ - Radio Timesā€œThe Unbeatables is great fun for young and old.ā€ - Daily Expressā€œNice jokes at the expense of FIFA, overpaid prima donna footballers and slimy agents.ā€ - Daily Mailā€œLively and consistently funny.ā€ - Irish Timesā€œAn utterly charming gem. Deft one-liners. Back of the net!ā€ - Irish Independent
  • Teddy Bear's Travels: Teddy Bear's Picnic

    Stephen Richard Smith

    language (, Sept. 4, 2017)
ā€˜Teddy Bearā€™ is his name ā€“ his first and second nameā€¦his real name. He lives in woods near Londonā€™s Regentā€™s Park until one day, he decides to visit relatives. Cross-country journeys for bears in cities are never straightforward, however, and soon, his travels take an unexpected turn (or two, or three). These tales of innocence and misadventure (of which, this is the first) seek to emulate the feel of classic ā€˜bearā€™ tales of old when, no matter how well planned and well intentioned the bear, distraction and the possibilities of exploration are always around the next corner.Written in rhythmic rhyming couplets, these mini-stories are simple in construction and theme. No great meaning to uncover here ā€“ just read and enjoy.Stephen Richard Smith. Cert Ed, B.Sc. MA.

  • StarList 2000: A Quick Reference Star Catalog for Astronomers

    Richard Dibon-Smith

    Paperback (Wiley, July 15, 1992)
Which is larger, Sirius or Vega? What is the luminosity of Rigel? When will Mira come up to full brightness? Here's one simple-to-use reference which quickly answers these questions and many more. This handy star catalog gives the characteristics of over 2,000 stars to a brightness of 5.25 visual magnitude (plus many dimmer exceptions) updated with Epoch 2000 data. The book brings together information not available in any other single source. Employing a unique, easy-to-use constellation-by-constellation format, StarList 2000 gives you all these properties for each star: location, visual and absolute magnitude, spectra, distance in light years, proper motion, spatial and radial velocity, parallax, size, and luminosity. Notes compare discrepancies in data from well-known sources and point out additional interesting facts and figures about selected stars and deep sky objects, such as nearby nebulae. There are special sections on binaries and variables. Rapid-motion binaries are covered in detail, giving exact locations at January 1, 2000. There is also a collection of drawn orbits and a listing of orbital elements of selected binaries. Data on variable stars include type of variability, maximum and minimum visual magnitude, epoch, and period of variability. The author also offers a unique feature--"Most Favorable Viewing Date"--that tells readers when variables are expected to be at their brightest. StarList 2000 includes an appendix of computer programs for calculating such information as the Julian Date, the date of midnight transit for any star, and the azimuth and altitude of any star viewed from your own backyard. Indexes list stars by right ascension, popular name, and constellation.
